Using the Motion LE1600

| | Comments (0)

As I mentioned earlier, I'm borrowing a Motion Computing LE1600 slate tablet. It's a damned cool device, and my only gripe so far has been that the keyboard/stand thing (pictured at right) doesn't really work too well on a lap...which, oddly, is exactly how I'm using the machine right now.

I suppose that the problem here is that the LE1600 is too heavy to be cantilevered up by the little stand, and the keyboard can't be plugged in any othe way—it uses a small USB connection on the piece of aluminium that holds the Motion up in the air. What would make this work would be a small Bluetooth keyboard sitting next to the device. I've found that most of the time, there's enough space to lie the screen down so it's visible (especially with the View Anywhere display—oh good God is this thing sweet) and have enough room to fit a small keyboard.

It turns out that Motion's other tablet, the LS800 (which is equally sweet, from what I hear), doesn't come with the goofy USB stand option but instead is available with a (pricey) Bluetooth board.

The LE1600 does actually have Bluetooth built in, but I don't think I'm going to thrown down two benjamins unless I know I'm going to be using the keyboard long-term...which won't be the case until I'm pretty much finished with the loaner program I'm on. Damn.
