What's a girl to do?
Though I am not all about the mentality of oh she is a female — we must give her a job, it is only fair I am completely for things that girls can learn or do to become more respected in the work place. Last night I purchased a book from Amazon1 called Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office
Really, it is not just women that need to consciously look at how they act in situations and where those actions might lead. I for one am a strong believer that if you want something it is your responsibility to get it. Though just doing my job the way it feels naturally could quite possibly lead me down a path of wonderful success, I would rather pay attention on my journey.
I don't think I get treated differently at work because people perceive me differently for being a woman, but I do think that there are things that I do, as a woman, that are different than the men that I work with. There are other things that I do which I find have very close similarities to actions of the males around me. Some intersection of these traits contains the things that I would like to either improve on by changing them or by focusing more on. Either way, my next step will be to read my new book and see if there are things that I don't already notice about myself and then evaluate each as to whether I see it as an asset or hindrance.
1 Amazon's personal recommendations for me were awesome! Every single one was a CS type of book. I wonder what my latest purchase will cause.
