Giving Tree
At work we have a giving tree in the lobby. Actually most (or should I say many, I really don't know many) buildings on campus have the trees. As you would expect there are tags hanging all over them — each with a Christmas gift wish writing on the back. The requesters range from little boys and girls up to elderly men and women.
One thing that I find to be particularly exciting is that we get corporate matching. Basically, the receipt for the purchase is handed in with the gift and the dollar amount is matched by Microsoft; whatever is spent on the gift is matched dollar for dollar. I know that the different non-profit organizations have a lot of costs that go along with providing the means to get the donated gifts wrapped and to the people. The cash match surely helps immensely with that aspect of it. It is also nice to know that any donation goes twice as far.
So far (I might get another later) I have taken two tags off the tree. It was really hard to stop at just two. The ones I picked both happen to be for girls: a Barbie doll for a four year old and a nail polish set for a teenager. Dan also grabbed one for a little girl who wants a sing along microphone. Time to go shopping.
