Laylaland activated

Yep, that is right boys and girls. laylaland.org is up and running. You all know it exists, but now you can get to Dan's and my blogs from there now at least. Here are more ways to get to our blogs than you should ever want.

If you just go to laylaland.org you will just get the default under construction page for now. Eventually I will put something there. For now just wait until I post about my awesome new webpage. Since Dan is the one that actually puts the effort into setting everything up, I have mostly just been sitting back and enjoying everything. It seems like every day there is some new thing he setup to make our home computing better. So now I am rambling, but my point is that I have been a slacker in regards to setting, well anything computer related, up at home lately.

Giving Tree

At work we have a giving tree in the lobby. Actually most (or should I say many, I really don't know many) buildings on campus have the trees. As you would expect there are tags hanging all over them — each with a Christmas gift wish writing on the back. The requesters range from little boys and girls up to elderly men and women.

One thing that I find to be particularly exciting is that we get corporate matching. Basically, the receipt for the purchase is handed in with the gift and the dollar amount is matched by Microsoft; whatever is spent on the gift is matched dollar for dollar. I know that the different non-profit organizations have a lot of costs that go along with providing the means to get the donated gifts wrapped and to the people. The cash match surely helps immensely with that aspect of it. It is also nice to know that any donation goes twice as far.

So far (I might get another later) I have taken two tags off the tree. It was really hard to stop at just two. The ones I picked both happen to be for girls: a Barbie doll for a four year old and a nail polish set for a teenager. Dan also grabbed one for a little girl who wants a sing along microphone. Time to go shopping.

Kitty toys

As I mentioned, on thanksgiving Dan and I went to our friend Rich's house. He too has a cat. He also has a laser pointer which showed to be great amusement when a cat is around. In constant search for kitty toys Dan and I immediately agreed that we needed to get a laser pointer of our own for Aleph and Fifo.

Clearly this called for a trip to Fry's. Don't worry this is not going to digress into a rabid day after thanksgiving biggest shopping day of the year adventure to fry's story. Boy was that fun — actually it was. The point is that we got a laser pointer.

We also got another toy for them on Saturday; a squiggle ball. This thing is a plastic ball around 4" in diameter and with a AA battery it squiggles around the floor. It works surprisingly well at navigating around the house and also quite well at getting the attention of two very silly kitties.

Needless to say Aleph and Fifo are happy little guys. Perhaps excited and crazy would be a better way to describe their reactions. The recent spaziness is particularly odd for Fifo. Aleph, he is always a nut and easy to get riled up. Fifo is usually sweet and he spends his time trying to find a calm place to lay around. My goodness we have unleashed the furry in Fifo! Since the introduction of these new toys we have seen a whole new cat.

Overall finding new kitty toys has been a major bonus. The cats love them and Dan can watch the kitties chase that little red dot for hours (admittedly, so can I). It brings much giggling to the house.

You don't need all your junk

Over the years I have become somewhat of a pack rat. There are things that I have owned for years and haven't thought about in almost that long. The only time I see some of these oh so important things is when I am moving — those long days of packing and unpacking all of my belongings that have grown over time.

Most of the things are perfectly good, but I just don't have a need for them. My rationale has been that if I get rid of these things that I might need them. Then I would just have to buy them all over again. More than anything I think college created this mindset for me. Not college specifically but my lifestyle while going to school. I was always broke and my life was in almost constant change. I have graduated and there is no reason to surround myself my material things that only make me feel guilty that I don't use them. The fact is, that I don't use the stuff and someone else could be. Even if I have to re-buy one or two things, who cares, other people will have things they need.

Regardless of my reasoning, I have had enough of it. Today was the first big huge step in the right direction. Dan and I dropped off somewhere around 200lbs. of clothing and linens off at Goodwill today. It was amazingly easy. We have been planning taking things to get donated for awhile now. Actually doing it took less than a day.

This is not just an it's easy once you get started speech. Goodwill really has their act together. The one we went to had a drive through drop off. Literally, you drive your car through these two buildings; stop and people come and take the things that you hand them. They give you a receipt, thank you and send you on your way. The people who work there go out of their way to make it quick and simple. I don't know if it is true outside of WA, but there are also donation drop off bins all around town as well.

I am not saying give away everything you own and use, but if you have things that you don't use or feel you need you should take the few minutes and give them away so that someone can use what you don't want. Places like Goodwill are great because they provide items at low cost and then use the revenue to job training programs and other community initiatives. If you have a place you prefer, by all means give to them. Either way, I bet it will make you feel great to get rid of one thing or a mountain of things.

Dominion

Last night Dan surprised me by asking what domain name I would like. It may sounds cheesy or geeky (cheeky?) but it was really sweet. Sure I could have decided to get a domain any day of the week, but I hadn't and now I am exceedingly happy about having on of my very own.

My pick, well, pick of names that were not taken was laylaland.org. Yep, my very own land in the massive int-rrr-net. Buahaha.

What does this mean to you? Now you must go and update your links and change a bunch of stuff. Don't people just suck when they go domain jumping?

Not really, my blog is staying right were it is. The only change is that soon there will be a second optional address for me to give out. Not to worry, there are several things in the works being thought about to make wonderful use of laylaland.org.

More than meets the eye

Who has not wanted to dress up as a transformer? Almost every Halloween I have thought about going through the effort of creating a look-a-like transformer costume. Obviously if I had ever gone through with it I wouldn't be talking about it like this.

Even if I had made a costume my greatest hope would have been to look like a transformer. Never would I have expected to be able to really create a transforming costume.

Well, now for about four grand you yourself can have a transforming costume of your very own. These things are ridiculous. Thank you engaget for leading me to the most awesone costumes ever.

Squash Stuffing

For thanksgiving Dan and I are going to Rich and Manuel's place. Kit and Steph are also showing up. Aside from the fact that Rich offered and is cooking the turkey, his place is the obvious location since there is enough space and in a prime location—on the lake.

The plan is that it is potluck. At the moment I can't think of who is bringing exactly what. Regardless, I am sure we will be set with plenty of tasty food. As for Dan and I, we are bringing mashed potatoes and squash stuffing. The mashed potatoes were simple to make; I have done this before. Boil some potatoes (skin on) then mash with a bit of cream (or half & half because we are coffee drinkers) and some minced onions and garlic cooked in butter.

The Stuffing is a bit of a different thing though. This is inspired by my mother. She made this last thanksgiving, not long after I had completely given up flour. It was actually quite spectacular that she made a full thanksgiving meal without any of the many things I could not eat at the time. Enough of my sappy moment, where was I?

Oh, yes, I have never made squash stuffing, until today. There is a lot more than squash in this thing. I might have gone a bit crazy with it, but that is quite alright.

If you want to try it or see what my silliness includes, here you go. The type of squash used was butternut—the one that looks kind of like a giant pear. To begin cut them in half and baked them for 30 minutes at 375 in a half inch of chicken broth. Once they are tender use a peeler to get the skin off. This may have be a more time consuming option than just cutting it off—pick which ever. Finally cut the squash into cubes or whatever shape you feel like.

Haha, you think that is it. While all of the squash things are going on, you can be cutting up any of these things: apple, onion, garlic, zucchini, mushrooms, walnuts, dried cranberries (and/or apricots), celery, and parsley. Yes, I all of those things went into what I made today. Add poultry seasoning (thyme, rosemary, marjoram ...) and cook in butter (or olive oil) until translucent. I also added a splash of the chick broth from the squash.

Mix everything and put in a dish that can go in the oven. Right before eating put it in the oven until it is warm and the right consistency. Or so I say.

One 12 pack

264oz of beer 110oz of beer

I mentioned before that Dan and I were going to Issaquah with the hopes of finding our favorite Rogue beer flavors. Sure enough it was completely worth the drive.

First off the drive itself was quite nice. There are multiple ways to get there from here. We chose the east Sammamish route. The road basically follows Lake Sammamish. With almost no traffic, it took half the time we estimated to get to the brewery.

As for the town of Issaquah, well, how can I describe it other than calling it quaint? My goodness. I was literally expecting people to jump out and start singing or something. It was decorated to the t and just plain quaint. I forget how the rest of WA is until I travel out of the Seattle-Redmond-Bellevue area.

Finding Costco (out other destination) and the Rogue brewery was trivial.

To get it out of the way, Costco was worthless. I have already had a conversation with people trying to convince me that it is better than it is. I am glad that I went there and found that I needed nothing and had zero reason to get a membership. I am done talking about Costco.

Back on topic ... beer. So, the brewery has great beer. Their food is also quite nice. The have all organically raised meet (I don't want to hear about raising animals and eating meat—same thing) and fairly healthy versions of typical brewery food. Next time I am in Issaquah, I will likely eat there again. Another bonus to their food is that they cook with beer. Mmmm.

In the end we were able to get the beer in bottles. The one caveat was that all the bottles were 22oz. At first we almost bought 6 of Dan's favorite, the hazelnut. Luckily the kind waiter informed us that buying 11 bottles got you one extra for free. Without hesitation we went for the 12 pack.

This was just a few days ago. We came home with 264oz (contrary to popular drunk belief 12x22 does not equal 244). Today we have 110. Perhaps my next visit to Issaquah will be sooner than expected.

Bear with me

Once very involved in a situation it is easy to get blinded by spur of the moment thoughts. So often taking a moment to collect one's thoughts can shed new light on a situation. Even more helpful is discussing the issue.

This is why so often the moment you rush to ask some one for help you solve your own issue half way through. Yes, it can be helpful in solving the current issue, but the now randomized and probably confused person that was unnecessarily interrupted is probably not too pleased.

Thoroughly writing down the exact issue which needs to be solved, before going to someone, can drastically eliminate excess questions. If the shear process of annotating the situation doesn't lead to a solution then there is now a concise thought out idea to convey to a potential helper.

I was recently told the story of the Stanford Bear. The way I heard it was that a rule in class was that every question had to first be asked to the bear. So, before asking the TA a question, students had to walk over to a little stuffed bear and out loud ask it a question. If the bear didn't answer it, then the student could then ask the TA.

I think that is a brilliant idea; a true lesson in answering your own questions by talking through the issue.

Well, there wasn't a doubt in my mind that this story was true. Even if it wasn't, I figured it was worthy and it should become true.

Amused that the cleverness of this teaching style, I did a quick search on the topic. Apparently someone heard the story differently. Assuming how I heard it was true, this person missed the boat. Someone apparently thought that the bear itself would actually answer the questions. Surely it is believable that some TA would actually use their powers for automating themselves and installing the answering machine into a bear. Right?

As cool as talking teddy bears are, teaching students to answer questions themselves seems a bit more plausible to me. Note only is it great for the students to become self sufficient, but think about all the time saved by the TA.

Has anyone else heard anything about this alleged genius bear?

Chicks on the internet

Now that I have your attention ...
The first thing that popped into your mind was a bunch of articles written by a woman, right? No?!?

A few days ago Dan mentioned the new lego-cased external hard drives. After my initial amused reaction he sent me the link.

Aside from the fact that lego+hard drive == pretty cool, the link itself is interesting in my opinion. The site is chip chick. This blog is dedicated to giving a girl's view of new gadgets and overall tech news. Some of the articles seem very main stream. There are also items that seem silly.

I can't say that I am surprised that there are girls regularly blogging about techie things, but it is nice to see it. Looking around the site, I found that they have a small aggregation of other geek-girl bloggers.

For all I know, there are more girls out there doing this type of thing than guys, but I somehow doubt it. Good thing I am not a feminist! I would probably hate myself for my narrow mindedness. Really though, I haven't really expected to find any large quantity of quality tech information online coming from girls.

It is only fair to mention that I have also not been seeking out sites created by girls. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I am getting into blogging myself for the first time, that I even noticed it was a girl's site. Either way, I think it is neat and I will start to pay a bit more attention.

I don't think I will actually join, but it looks like girls can join in and get assigned gadgets to write about. I don't have any real reason for not joining in myself, other than being timid, I guess. Eh, who knows. I would love to hear about any of you (the girl, maybe girls who read this) being involved in anything like this.

Well, if nothing else, now you have yet another place to find out about the latest tech goodies and news, but with a dash of girly.

Burgers and fries

Doesn't sound like the most healthy meal now does it? Amazingly it can be fairly good for you (comparatively). It can also taste very different than, let's say, McD's.

Here is my version of each:

So there is my take on burgers and fires. I think Dan actually took a picture (his burger was a bit massive). That might get added later.

It is clearly not diet food, but it is free of all the weird crap places put in food now-a-days. One of my favorite reasons I enjoy cooking so much is the knowledge of what exactly I feed us.

Edit: Fixed. Good catch Jarrod. Oops.

Live.com is ultramegahot

So, wow. live.com is awesome.

Many of you have heard of start.com. Thanks to start.com, I have grown used to reading all of my feeds and getting daily information all in one location.

When I first saw live.com awhile ago I figured it would be similar and didn't pay a huge amount of attention. It is still in a beta state, but it already solves many things for me. This is exactly what I have been looking for.

What really makes it great are the ideas and gadgets. My personal must-have-list includes the favorites gadget and the scratch pad.

I have to go off for a second about the scratch pad. This alone is worth using live.com in my opinion. Just the other day I was complaining about how often I email myself. My desk has post-it notes which I always need when I am anywhere other than at my desk. I can't leave out all the random notes that end up in pointless files because it isn't quite appropriate to add to a todo list. My point is that I always have little notes that I want to remember and have access to in the very near future. These notes don't need to live forever. The big thing is having them there when I want them. This super simple little gadget solves that. It has network or local machine storage. Yay.

As for the favorites ... finally a way of keeping my favorites available on any machine without having to have my own dumb webpage.

Other things on my live.com page include blog feed, news feed, and weather. Oh yea, and my email — all on one page. I am sure that the list of what I have on my page will grow. That is my page though. Do what you would like with yours.

Iss-a-quah?

There isn't much I know about Issaquah. Today, that is where we are headed — for a few good reasons.

Perhaps you will get an update if something amazing happens or if we buy something that is totally awesome. Hmm, this is probably it.

Coffee complications

Awhile back Dan mentioned a coffee incident. He was actually quite nice and didn't mention that it was me who totally goofed and forgot to change thr grounds.

Come to think of it, I forgot to change the grounds in the hotel coffee when I went to New Mexico last week. I blame that on the confusion of two people making the coffee at the same time.

So, yes, I am the ultimate at forgetting to change the grounds. Gosh it really sucks when that happens too.

Well, today I did not forget the grounds. I wasn't the one making the coffee at all. Dan ground the coffee. Replaced the filter and added the grounds. He then got water. A few minutes later the clicking of the finished-and-sitting coffee pot started. Hmm, I didn't notice the sound of the coffee actually getting made. Lo and behold, the water must be poured into the machine to actually make coffee. Oh, so close.

The now-warm water got poured out and new cold water was put into the machine. Yay. Oh wait. A few more minutes later I noticed that there was no coffee. Oops. Guess the coffee pot should be on.

Coffee time came a bit late today. Oh the joy of someone else having coffee pot issues for once.

Computer Kitties

Aleph looks so cute in his fort (which I made for him out of a futon) playing with his matching mouse. He really loves his house. I mean his mouse. He loves his mousey house.

Now Fifo is a bit confused. He has very different taste in mice. This picture doesn't show this, but he actually seems to like keyboard buttons even better. Apparently, buttons feel great against kitty paws.

Nevertheless they both make awesome computer kitties. We all know that computer kitties are much better than computer mice.

Centsible business

I haven't had tv for awhile now. My internet is still cable, but that is a side note. In any event, several months ago, I closed my Comcast account. My gosh. What an ordeal. Not only was a closing my account, I was changing the current setup into someone else's name.

Comcast was not the most fun thing to deal with. Would I do business with them again? Yea, probably. Did I waste a bit of time and have to deal with major mistakes? Yes, very yes.

So, we finally get to the reason I am bringing this up at all.

Wow. Apparently they owed me some money. I didn't think places even bothered issuing a check for under a dollar. They spent almost that on postage. What kind of person would have even noticed that they had over paid less than a dollar?

This is almost worth going into the bank to see the tellers face in reaction. I wonder if I can choose what coins I get!

Green Chili

I bet you think I am going to talk about how nice it was to go back to New Mexico and have great green chili. Well, you would be wrong. Before I continue, I do think that New Mexico has the best chili.

That said ... I ate green chili for pretty much every meal, and it all sucked. What a disappointment. I tried the normal chili and the chopped at el camino. Both times I had to order extra. It still lacked flavor and heat. Jimmy's in Albuquerque was much better food, but the chili wasn't amazing by any means.

Not to worry, there is a good ending yet. Months back Bill++ drove out here to visit me. They came baring gifts of frozen chili. Mmm, so tasty (thank's again guys). After returning from the trip Sunday I used the last of it.

Green chili chicken enchiladas. Yummy. There are a few things that I think I make better than most restaurants. Enchiladas fit into this group. They are so easy to make though, I don't know how they get messed up. Here is what I put into mine in case you want to make some.

Cook then chop the chicken. Mix slightly sautéed diced jalapeno, onion and garlic in with the chicken and mushroom soup. Heat the corn tortillas in olive oil. Then make layers of tortilla, mix, then cheese. I usually do 3 layers. Heat at 320-350 until melty and warm.

Shhh don't tell anyone

Reading Aisa0's post this morning I have been thinking about how I have changed my posts (hopefully completely).

Just in case you didn't follow the link and read it ... he basically asked why people make posts friends-only.

Here is my response

My current blog is open to all. My livejournal on the other hand was not. There are a few reasons.

1) This was the biggest. I didn't use it as a blog. I used it as a way to communicated directly to a small group of people who used lj.

2) If I mentioned personal things that I would not normally give out to everyone.

3) If I talked specifically about thing that involved other people and I mentioned them. This is mostly for events that I was unsure they would want to share with the world but would be fine for our little group.

4) Occasionally I would talk about my health or work (no detail).

Basically, the first point is the real answer. About a handful of the posts really needed to be. None of those needed to be written though.

After writing the comment though, I thought for a minute about why I have made the change. Without hesitation I have to say it is completely because of Dan and his blog. Those are two separate points. I wont really go into detail about my personal motivations, but I will say that his blog was the first that I really considered worth reading.

So with this in mind I consider myself a new blogger. In time I am sure it will come more naturally. At this point I am just glad that I am beginning to create something that I feel happy about sharing.

The world is too big

Finally home from another day traveling I decided to calculate how many miles I have flown this year. Just a few trips have added up to a decent number of hours a plane.

Here are the places I have flown:

Total miles = 22,293

With the circumference of the Earth being approximately 24,900 miles it doesn't look like I will make it around the world this year.

Not so tasty

>After being gone from Tech for awhile and then returning, a few things have changed. The most exciting thing to hear was that a coffee shop finally opened on campus.

Mmmm coffee. I have to admit I need my coffee. I also know that have become very spoiled. Living in Seattle it is odd to be farther than walking distance to a coffee shop — with decent coffee.

Where was I? Oh yes, Tech has a new coffee shop in the library. Tired and in need of some tasty caffeine I wondered over there.

Well, I don't know if it can really be called a coffee shop. There were three pitchers of coffee (one of them decaf). Who knows how long they had been sitting there. I have no idea where they even found water to make the coffee. It gets even better... they didn't have lids or cream. They did have the little stirry sticks so I guess they get points for that?

Perhaps I am just picky about my coffee.

Oh, the best part ... the register looked like a toy. It sat on a little table with handwritten sign hanging down. I felt like I was at the first indoor lemonade stand. Needless to say, I got a very odd look and then a quick no when I hesitantly asked if they took credit cards.

I miss Seattle.

It's not a cookie

It's fruit & nuts!

Since I don't eat sugar (or artificial sweeteners) or flour, finding snack food can be hard.

Dan amazingly found a granola bar type thingy. It looks just like one. In actuality it is just fruit & nuts.

I cannot find the wrapper, but I will post the website or the name at least.

It was really nice to have a snack for the plane ride today! Thanks Dan you are my hero *smile*

side note: I wrote this post with a pen.

Edit: the name of the bars are Think Organic

Geek Sheek

Like most girls, I like trying out new shampoos. I try to buy natural products whenever possible. Well, that is actually a whole different conversation.

Ok, getting to a point ...

My newest shampoo pick, well, take a look.

Yes, that really does say that. I have magnetic shampoo (and conditioner).

Update: New Mexico Tech recruiting trip

This is a reminder for all of you at Tech.

Thursday and Friday Dan and I will be presentation a tech talk and 2 information sessions. We actually took the time and wrote the talks ourselves. It should be laidback yet informative.

After the talks we will have time to answer individual questions. Please bring your resumes. Even if you are not attending to drop off a resume, the tech talk will be very interesting.

Oh, and I almost forgot...pizza and prizes!

Too many keyboards to count

This is out of control. Seriously. I ran out of fingers trying to count the number of keyboards in the apartment.

Lets count ... the Logitech, the French Microsoft wireless and the bendy one. Of course I can't forget the dvorak. I have never really used it enough to get used to it. The Motion and Toshiba each have keyboards as well. This is about where I started to lose count. There are at least a few others hiding around here and one in the trunk of the car.

Really, this is just wrong. I am not even a keyboard advocate. Choose Ink! Dan knows what's up.

'o' != 0

Letters are not numbers. Unlike letters, numbers do not have lower case versions.

Livejournal does not agree. If you look at the syndicated account for this blog you might not notice right away. For some reason 0xc0debabe is correct everywhere except when viewing it from a friends page.

Edit: This is actually a much better picture. As you can clearly see, letters and numbers are sold separately.

Edit (again): Livejournal is dumb because they use the Georgia typeface which underestimates the awesomeness of numbers.

New Mexico Tech recruiting trip

For the past few years (I really don't know when the first one was) NMT alumni who work at Microsoft have traveled back to campus to recruit. This year, Dan and I will be traveling to Socorro Thursday, November, 10th.

As Dan mentioned, the schedule is:

If you are going to be around you should attend the tech talk and one of the information sessions. Feel free to tell other people who might be interested.

The usual please

Places like Tap House usually offer beer samplers to allow people to try a larger selection without getting trashed. Many times samples are predefined — boring. Tap house kindly has a make-your-own sample option. This is clearly the way to go. No one else can be blamed if you get stuck with a crap beer.

Since even the bartender agreed that it was a great selection, I will share my personal favorite four Chamomellow, Brutal Bitter, Shakespear Stout, and HazelNut Brown Nectar

Yes, all of them are brewed by the same company, Rogue. The problem now seems to be that I need stop drinking my favorite sampler so I can try the rest of the Rogue varieties.
